Today there exists an enormous variety of spices, and one of the best known among them is actually the dried flower bud of the plant from which it takes its name. In Latin it is called Syzygium aromaticum, and until modern times it grew only on several islands of the Moluccan archipelago. Owing to its intense fragrance and pungent, slightly bitter taste, it came to be widely used in Europe for flavouring numerous foods, especially meat dishes, baked products, and warm drinks associated with the Christmas season.
